I grow vegetables and mushrooms on Møen. When a plant gets sick, the instinct is to add: more water, more fertilizer, more attention. Usually wrong. Usually you have to cut, and let the energy redirect to what's healthy.

April I spent thinking about retention the same way: tending what makes people stay, instead of piling on features to trap them.

The ones worth tending

Accountability pods: small groups where leaving feels like abandoning friends. The product becomes the people in it.

Belonging scarcity: a brand identity strong enough that leaving feels like losing your tribe. Harder to build than a discount, impossible to copy.

Streak mechanics: visible progress that people don't want to break. Almost too simple, and it works anyway.

And the quiet one: milestone celebrations. Notice when a user hits something. Most companies are too busy chasing the next signup to celebrate the people already there.

The thread

Churn is a garden problem. You can't add your way out of it. A leaky bucket doesn't get better because you pour faster.

The founders I trust obsess over the people already in the room. They send the note. They remember the name. They build the pod. It doesn't scale cleanly, and that is exactly why it works. The stuff that's hard to scale is the stuff competitors won't copy.

I don't have retention figured out for my own projects. Nobody does. But I've stopped asking "what feature keeps them" and started asking "what makes this feel like home." Better question.
